Gautier, Théophile (1811–1872), translated by Kline, A. S. (contact-email)

Originally published as Tra los Montes in 1843 and later as Voyage en Espagne in 1845, this work by Théophile Gautier stands as a celebrated example of Romantic literature, capturing the spirit of the Orientalist movement of the time. Gautier, who journeyed across the Iberian Peninsula in 1840 in the company of Eugène Piot, brings the landscape and culture of Spain to vivid life. Through his rich descriptions of Andalusia's warmth and beauty, Gautier contrasts the vibrant South with the stark, arid Meseta.

In this enhanced edition, Gautier’s journey is updated to make it accessible to modern readers. The proper names of people and places, and the titles given to works of art, have been fully researched, modernised, and expanded; comments in parentheses have been added here and there to provide a reference, or clarify meaning; and minor typographic or factual errors, for example incorrect attributions and dates, in the original text, have been eliminated from this new translation.
