Wagner's Tristan und Isolde

Abigail Dyer's modern translation of Wagner's own libretto for his influential opera Tristan und Isolde, is now available on the website here.

Wagner's libretto is freely based on Gottfried von Strassburg's twelfth century poem Tristan, while revealing the influence of Schopenhauer's philosophical works, as well as various elements from multiple religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, as well as Christianity. The drama is considered by many to be Wagner's greatest operatic achievement.

Our translation of Gottfried's Tristan can be found on the website here. His unfinished text is concluded by a translation of surviving fragments of Thomas of England's Tristan on which Gottfried based his version, to provide the reader with the complete tale in a consistent style.
